WGKG used as a venue for a positive government announcement

On the eve of the 2022 election, the kinder was chosen as the location for a positive announcement from the government for Early Childhood Education and a media doorstop. Visitors included the Premier, Minister Stitt, Kat Theophanous and a large number of media. Despite the very short notice, disruption and logistical challenges that this kind of initiative brings, the children and educators managed to pull everything together quickly and efficiently. Well done to all involved in making it work and appear so seamless on the day.

The Victorian government announces $3.6 million would be used to provide special grants to 150+ kindergartens to establish bush kinder programs.

Although we already know that our kinder is an exceptional one, it is satisfying to be officially recognised now, as an exceeding service.

Reflection - by Martin Cashmere (Educator)

In Early Childhood services where a play based program provides children with lengthy periods of uninterrupted focus, the educator is given an opportunity. The chance to listen and observe deeply. Witnessing abilities and struggles, strengths and challenges , but most of all the opportunity document while it happens. This is when the child's voice is the clearest and the educator's ear it's sharpest.

I place myself not within the play but near enough for connection. I'm comfortable. I'm working and the children know it; they will value my needs for time, focus and eye contact but we do not need to talk. They can call on me but often don't as they respect my work. It's reciprocal. I can remain interested and feel no need to insert myself, my thoughts or opinion into their work. This is where my best work is done."

Awareness of Food Allergies

It’s important to be aware that some foods are potentially life threatening to children. For this reason we ask that you avoid bringing in all nuts and sesame seeds (incl peanut butter, tahini and hummus). Please pack a lunchbox with healthy, energy sustaining foods. Piece of fruit/vegetable to share. A drink bottle with water. Please no nuts/nut spreads. Reduced/no packaging encouraged.
There are also children who have food allergies and intolerances that are not life threatening. Some children are on low sugar diets, some don’t eat pork, others are pescatarian, vegetarian and some vegan. Recognising and valuing difference provides an opportunity for children to learn about diversity.

How Can I Celebrate at Kinder?

Events like birthdays, Eid, Easter, or Hanukkah might be celebrated at kinder. Beautiful traditions of sharing food are common. If your child has a special dietary requirement please consider keeping a stash of special occasion food at kinder. Please let the kinder know if you have a recipe for a delicious nut free, sesame seed free, vegan cake . If you are looking for an alternative to cake, we have found watermelon or popcorn to be terrific options.

If you have any questions or suggestions have a chat to the educators.
